“Macau Energy Saving Activity” is now open for registration

Macau, 24 May 2020

CEM joins hands with the Office for the Development of Energy Sector of Macau SAR again to hold the “Macau Energy Saving Activity” between July and October 2020, calling for everyone in Macau to take part in energy saving and carbon reduction. Starting from today, all residential customers in Macau, property owner committees of buildings, property management companies, hotels and resorts can register for lucky draws or competitions of different categories to jointly promote green living and development.

Strengthening environmental protection and promoting green living is one of the key objectives of the Five-Year Development Plan (2016-2020) of the Macau SAR Government. To tie in with the government’s environmental policies, CEM strives to reduce the impact of its operation on the environment and provides excellent and reliable services in a sustainable way. For example, CEM fully uses low sulphur fuel oil and natural gas as the main power generation fuels and completed the retrofitting of the combined cycle gas turbine units in 2019. With the use of natural gas and fuel oil, the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) significantly fell by 60% and 80% respectively. The remarkable results meet the NOx emission standards set forth in the “Air Pollutant Emission Standards for Power Plants” newly defined by the Macau SAR Government.

In addition, CEM organizes various activities every year to promote energy conservation and energy efficiency to the society while the “Macau Energy Saving Activity” has been held for 11 consecutive years. All participating units saved a total of over 209 million kWh of electricity and reduced carbon emissions by over 58 million kilograms, which is equivalent to the planting of 2.5 million trees.

This year’s Activity continues to have two categories and the comparison is based on the four consecutive billing months of electricity consumption from July to October 2020 with the same period in 2019. Residential customers in group A who save electricity consumption by 5% or more can participate in the lucky draw after registration to win prizes totaling MOP 90,000.

Another category is for “Hotel Group” and “Residential Building Public Facilities Group”. The Hotel Group is subdivided into Hotel Group A (subscribed demand ≦1,600 kVA) and Hotel/Resort Group B (subscribed demand > 1,600 kVA). Gold, Silver, Bronze and Excellence awards will be presented to the winners. Besides, there will be “Energy Saving Concept Award” and “Continuous Energy Saving Award” to acknowledge the continuous efforts in energy conservation. Hotels/resorts which participate in this year’s Contest with continuous electricity consumption reduction in the billing months of July to October in 2018, 2019 and 2020 will receive certificates. Gold, Silver, Bronze and Excellence Awards winners of “Residential Building Public Facilities Group” will receive certificates.

As in the past, the Activity is co-organized by General Residents Association of Macau, Property Management Business Association of Macau and Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association. To ensure the impartiality of the contest, a judging panel comprised of professionals is formed to make the final judgement on the results of “Hotel Group” and “Residential Building Public Facilities Group”. Representatives include Lewis Chan, Macau Consumer Council Executive Committee Member; João Ramos, Chairman of Macau Energy Saving Association; Cheang Io Tung, President of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association; Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers and Tomas Leong, Council of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies.

“Macau Energy Saving Activity” is open for enrollment from now till 30 September 2020. Detailed information can be browsed on CEM Website www.cem-macau.com. For enquiries, please call 8393 1205.
